Smart City: Trend in big urban areas

A smart city is a technologically modern urban area that uses different electronic methods and sensors to collect specific data. Information collected from that database is used to manage assets, resources, and services efficiently; in return, that data is used to improve operations across the city. (Wikipedia)

WHAT IS A SMART CITY?

A smart city uses multiple software, user interfaces, and communication networks along with the Internet of Things (IoT) to provide connected solutions for the entire population inside.

Developing the Smart City model in urban projects will help improve the quality of life and residents’ lives, improve the management quality of the Management Board, and above all, reduce power consumption and increase the use of natural resources effectively.

KEY ELEMENTS OF A SMART CITY

The key elements needed to create an integrated urban or smart city are two-way influencing and interacting with each other, including:

  • Organizational management: The government must be E-government, using modern information technology.
  • Economy: Smart economy, is the main driving force to building Smart Cities.
  • Technology: A Smart City’s critical infrastructure and services are managed by smart computing technology. Information and communication technology infrastructure: affecting the quality of Smart City development.
  • Residential community: The main subjects of a Smart City, are modern citizens, capable of participating in monitoring, and even coordinating to support city management.
  • Natural environment: The core of Smart City is the application of technology for sustainable development, effective natural resource management, as well as good resistance to agents that cause natural environmental change.

WHY SMART CITY WOULD BE THE TREND IN THE NEXT FEW YEARS IN VIETNAM?

In the current “technological” era, in order to develop the economy and comprehensive urban infrastructure, it is necessary to have an urban model that meets the criteria of scientific and technological progress. Smart City is a digital transformation model from the old one, helping the city to integrate into the trend of intelligent technology globalization.

Smart city features such as energy saving and environmental efficiency, such as street lights dimming when sensors detect the streets empty. In addition to services, Smart City enables the provision of safety measures such as the use of sensors to enable early warning of incidents (floods, landslides, storms, or droughts, v.v.)

Smart buildings can also provide management and alerting features to let you know when repairs are needed. Residents can also access this system to notify the Management Board of any problems, such as broken street lights. In addition, sensors can also monitor infrastructure problems such as leaks in water pipes, gas leaks, v.v. to promptly prevent serious problems.

With the Smart City App, residents can access to notify the Management Board of any problems.

Smart Apartment Management applications can be considered one of the first steps in developing a Smart City on a small scale. With features such as resident communication, the Management Board can now receive and resolve recommendations and reports from the residents for timely maintenance and repair, contributing to improving the lives of residents. Besides, with the management of equipment and materials, the Management Board can also statistic the equipment of the building and set the time for maintenance.

Smart City development will help attract investment and talented human resources for the city and the country. Therefore, the development of Smart City is associated with factors of education development, conditions for accessing health care services, building a financial center, and developing trade and services.
